The ladybird has been a favourite of kids for many years. They're red and black colour is eye catching and beautiful, simplistic and easy to replicate. They are small and harmless and their history is one of companionship rather than extermination. They have been seen as our friends helping to remove pests in the garden and their bright appearance to herald the coming of the summer.

They have also been used in a poems, songs, stories and films as characters. Perhaps one of the most popular ladybird characters appears in Roald Dahl's book called James and the Giant Peach where the Ladybird features as a kind and motherly figure, close to the lead character.

For she has crept under the warming pan.
